“Hadiya’s authentically teenage voice, emotional struggles and concerns make her story all the more resonant.”  ~Publishers Weekly

“…the book is eye-opening and important. Hadiya’s vivid descriptions of her feelings about the war are heartbreaking as she worries about dying in a war she doesn’t believe in.” ~School Library Journal

We gravitate to those stories that relate first-hand experiences of living through dramatic situations, war being as dramatic as they come.  Certainly then, I expected there would eventually come a diary of a child’s or a teen’s experience in Afghanistan or Iraq.  I didn’t expect one to be published during the midst of these wars, but I just learned of one that was.

IraqiGirl: Diary of a Teenage Girl in Iraq, as the name implies is a collection of a teenage, Iraqi girl’s blog postings from her home in Mosul, Iraq.  American editors found the blog and decided to publish, although “Hadiya” (a pseudonym) actually wrote the blog postings in English herself.  The young lady still writes posts on her blog regularly as she studies to become a pharmacist.

Middle school readers, please consider adding this title to your collection and advertising it to students and teachers.

And the winners of this year’s ALA Youth Literary Awards are…. Read here to find out!

I imagine all your favorite vendors have been emailing you already with their prepared “Winner Booklists” ready for you to order.  Happy shopping!

If you’ve already got some of these titles on the shelves, how are you advertising them to students?  How are students liking these titles?

We are working on increasing our links section, especially the authors and illustrators.  We don’t want to list every author/illustrator website just for the sake of listing, but we would like to include those authors and illustrators with particularly good websites.

Will you help us?

Leave a comment and share your favorite auth/ill site and a few words about why you think it’s such a quality site.  Don’t forget to check back later to see what links others have suggested in the comments as well as what we’ve added to our links section!  (It’s on the left.)

Thanks in advance!  The collective wisdom of bibliophiles is a treasure!
